It was a busy day at the office, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed with all the “to dos” on my list. There was one item in particular that was causing me some angst. I approached my executive to get his input about how to manage some of the details. His advice to me was this: “You’re a high-profile executive assistant, I’m sure you can figure it out. Remember, you don’t have to do everything—delegate.”

Wow, what a concept. I felt truly empowered to get the job done with the simple word delegate. I found I can have great success if I properly delegate. I start by asking these three questions:

Get your checklists and tips for delegating

  1. Is it an appropriate task to delegate?
  2. Will it save me time?
  3. Will it develop others?

If the answer is yes, and in order to make the assignment effective, I then ask questions that include: who, what, when, where, why and how. Giving clear expectations and deadlines to those you delegate to can build relationships and provide personal growth as well as satisfaction with a job well-done.

The next time you have a project, try using delegating techniques. To help you with this process, download my free template with the 10 Steps to delegating.
